I’m Gabriel Ruy, and I am a 20-year old feature reporter based in Vancouver. I grew up in the Philippines, and moved to Vancouver two years ago to pursue a career in journalism.
Two years in BCIT’s Broadcast and Online Journalism program taught me a lot, and it made me realize my true passion for journalism lay in cultural and artistic stories. I’ve always had a passion for writing since I was young, and it has translated into the work I do now. I enjoy reporting on stories about the arts, history, environment, and culture of Vancouver.
Aside from my time as a journalism student, I worked part-time as an online writing tutor for post-secondary students in B.C. for 8 months. This opened me up to tackle many more topics outside of journalism, and it has expanded my skillset as a writer and communicator.
Pursuing my passion for the arts, I interned at Peliplat, a film discussion website, for three weeks. During my time there, I enjoyed posting opinion pieces about films and shows, and helped boost engagement on the site. I also interned at CBC Vancouver’s newsroom for a month, which taught me a lot about representing community stories fairly. I wrote radio stories, made calls to confirm news reports, and shadowed reporters in the field.
My experiences in writing and news reporting have molded me into a driven feature reporter, with a passion for telling Vancouver’s innermost stories.
